Florida Class “D” Unarmed Security Officer License Course
Duration: 42 Hours
Format Options:
In-Person – 4 Consecutive Days (10 Hours/Day, 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM)
Live Online – Instructor-Led Virtual Training (Real-Time Attendance Required)

Course Overview:
The Florida Class “D” Security Officer License is the required credential for anyone seeking to work as an unarmed security professional in Florida. Licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, this license qualifies individuals for employment in retail security, construction sites, houses of worship, schools, events, hospitals, and more.

At ESS Global Academy, we offer the full 40-hour state-mandated training in two convenient formats: in-person or live online. Our online program is not pre-recorded—it is delivered in real time through our advanced Learning Management System (LMS) with live instructor proctoring, ensuring a fully interactive, compliant, and engaging learning experience.

Upon successful completion of the training and written exams, students receive a Certificate of Completion, allowing them to apply for a temporary Class “D” license and begin working immediately while awaiting their permanent card from the state.

Our Live Online Class format combines the convenience of remote learning with the structure and accountability of real-time instruction. This state-approved virtual program includes:

• Live instructor-led sessions streamed via Zoom or LMS platform

• Attendance tracking and live proctoring

• Access to all course materials through the LMS portal

• Real-time Q&A, discussions, and student support

• Online written examinations administered under supervision

• Identical certification and eligibility as in-person training

This format is ideal for working professionals, out-of-area students, or anyone seeking the flexibility of remote training with the quality of in-person instruction.

Who Can Take This Course?
Anyone may enroll. However, to apply for a Class “D” license, students must meet the eligibility criteria outlined in Florida Statute 493.6109, including:

✔ Minimum age of 18 years
✔ Good moral character
✔ U.S. citizen or legal resident
✔ No disqualifying mental health or substance abuse history
✔ No felony or disqualifying criminal convictions

• Florida Statutes (F.S. 493) & Administrative Code (5N-1 FAC)

• Legal concepts, ethics, and professional conduct

• Basic first aid & emergency response

• Patrol procedures, observation, and reporting

• Access control, fire safety, terrorism awareness

• Written Examination

• Public relations & interpersonal communication

• Courtroom testimony and procedures

• Traffic and crowd control

• Personal security and conflict resolution

• Special topics in security and expanded terrorism awareness

• Written Examination

Note: Firearms training is not included in the Class “D” license. Students seeking armed roles must complete the 28-hour Class “G” License course after obtaining or applying for their “D” license.
